Donald P. Schlegel, 94, executive at Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 32 years, World War II veteran, and graduate of Lehigh University Class of 1950, avid golfer, and devoted husband and father, passed away February 17, 2021, after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Randi Dagmar Andersen Schlegel, of Bethlehem, with whom he shared over 73 years of marriage.

Born on September 30, 1926 and raised in Allentown, Donald (Don) was the middle child of the late Carl W. and Naomi Litzenberger Schlegel. Donald was an honor member of the Class of 1944 at Allentown High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division in the Pacific Arena, stationed in Korea, where he participated in the final battle of WWII with the invasion of the Japanese island of Okinawa. With the aid of the GI Bill, Don attended Lehigh University from 1947 to 1950, graduating in three years with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration and Phi Beta Kappa honors. Donald remained a life-time member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was also a member of Alpha Kappa Omega Fraternity.

Donald and Randi D. Andersen, also of Allentown, were married on June 12, 1948, while he was a student at Lehigh. Don joined Bethlehem Steel in 1950 and rose through the ranks of the Steel Operations division, ultimately serving as Assistant Controller at the height of the company's operations, overseeing all operations of the Corporation's steel plants before retiring in 1982.

After leaving Bethlehem Steel, Schlegel was President of ABC Small Business Consulting, In. and Business Analyst for the Small Business Development Center of Lehigh University. For years after retiring he worked as a volunteer tax assistant for seniors in filing income taxes. A resident of Bethlehem for 70 years, Donald was a long-time member of the Saucon Valley Country Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the St. Thomas United Church of Christ.

Donald is survived by his loving wife Randi, son David J. Schlegel of Spartanburg, SC, daughter Dr. Amy I. Schlegel and grandson Thomas W.P. Standish of Acton, MA, sister Muriel Marks of Macungie, nephews Keith Andersen of Lehighton, Bruce Andersen of Cape Coral, FL, and Donald Schlegel, and nieces Lynne Koharski and Sue Roberts.
