Evelyn Marie (Miller) Smith, 99, passed away July 29 in Moravian King's Daughters Home in Bethlehem, Pa. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, and co-chair of two church-sponsored annual community affairs for more than 40 years.

The middle child among three sisters, Smith was born May 20, 1925. She is survived by her son, Craig, and niece, Barbara-Anne Taylor. Smith was a 1943 graduate of Fountain Hill (Pa.) High School, where she was a three-year starting guard on the women's basketball team. She also was a member of the Betta Sigma Phi sorority, and president of the local chapter.

Together with her older sister Jeanette, Smith co-chaired the her church's lunch service for summer Bach Festival attendees and the church's fall Bazaar, which offered homemade crafts and foods, for four decades, well into her 70s. She also volunteered at the Bethlehem Better Buy Thrift Shop, Cedar Brook Nursing Home and St. Luke's Hospital.

She worked as a telephone operator for Weston Dotson and Company, a coal supplier in Bethlehem, for 10 years, and also worked at Yohe's Pharmacy in Bethlehem for another 10 years after getting married and starting a family.

She was married to Robert Smith, who served in WWII as a cannoneer, for more than 40 years until his passing in 1994. She later dated her high school classmate, Charlie Wolk, for eight years.

A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at St. Paul's Third Lutheran Church, 2561 Newburg Road, Easton, Pa., on Friday, Aug. 2, with a calling hour at 10:30 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m.
