Garrett R. Smith's Obituary
Garrett R. Smith, 90, of Bethlehem, died Friday, December 9, 2016. He was the loving husband of Kathryn (MacMurtrie) Freeh Smith. Born in Easton, he was a son of the late Garrett H. and Gladys (Kohler) Smith. He was a member of Central Moravian Church of Bethlehem.
Garrett graduated from Liberty High School in 1945. He started at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation that year as a clerk, was transferred to steel operations the following years, and was promoted to Secretary of Plant Committees in 1963. He retired in 1982. He moved to North Carolina, obtained his realtor's license, and sold properties for Beacon's Ranch, a land trust development of the Theodore Roosevelt family. He later managed the properties and served as dock master. At the same time, he obtained his EMT license, and served the community of Pine Knoll Shores for many years as a volunteer emergency responder.
He later moved back to Bethlehem, where he married his Liberty High School sweetheart. They recently celebrated their 24th year of marriage. He then worked for a courier company, and volunteered at Musikfest and in the emergency department of St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem.
Survivors: In addition to his wife, Kathryn, he is survived by a son, Gary of Lawrence, KS; a daughter, Alyssa Knowles Robertson, and husband Scott of Lopatcong, NJ; two grandchildren, Matthew Garrett and Taylor Knowles; a brother, J. Roger Smith in SC; and many cousins, neighbors and friends who loved his energy, spirit and sense of humor. He was predeceased by a daughter Karen (Hertzog) and his first wife Frances (Unger).
