John Edward Hoffman, 91 years of age, passed away on
Saturday, February 18, 2023 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He
peacefully passed from natural causes.
John was born April 13, 1931 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He
was the only son of Edward Hoffman and Evlyn Kenmuir-Hoffman of
Belfast, Ireland. John was raised in Abington Township, Montgomery
County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Pennsylvania State
University College of Chemistry and Physics in 1953 as a pre-medical
student. John then attended Hahnemann Medical College in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he obtained a Degree in Medicine.
John then served in the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving
Ground Army Base in Aberdeen, Maryland as a military physician/
Captain. In 1962, he started an internal medicine residency at St.
Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. John practiced
medicine, taking care of Lehigh Valley patients, for 37 years. He was
President of the St. Luke's Hospital Medical Staff and served on the
Executive Committee. He enjoyed taking care of the workers at
Bethlehem Steel Corporation and often left his home in the middle of
the night, carrying his medical bag, to do house calls.
John was preceded in death by his wife Anna Puprin-Hoffman in
2019.
John is survived by: David Edward Hoffman, MD and wife
Rebecca Hoffman, RN BSN ; Mark Douglas Hoffman, MS(IMNO);
James Kirk Hoffman, MS MD and wife Mia DePaulo-Hoffman RN
BSN; Grandson John Edward Hoffman II, Granddaughter Kathleen
Anna Shelton and husband Cameron Shelton; Great Grandson Henry
Patton Shelton.
John was a devoted husband and father. He spent considerable
time nurturing his three boys. He was forever grateful to the
Pennsylvania State University for advancing his education, an
opportunity that the rest of his family never had. His drive and
compassion were instilled in his children. After retiring from formal
practice, he pursued one of his favorite pastimes, fly fishing. He will
be missed by family, friends and patients that span multiple
generations.
A private service will be held by the family.
The family of John Edward Hoffman wishes to extend our
sincere thanks to multiple doctors, nurses, nurses aides, and
administrators that helped John make a comfortable and peaceful
passage.
