Lt. Col. Carl E. Adamcik, Usaf - Retired's Obituary
USAF Lieutenant Colonel Carl Edward Adamcik of Bethlehem, PA, died January 26, 2017, at 94 years of age. He and his wife, Dorothy (Dodds) Adamcik have been married for 72 years.
He was born January 29, 1922, in Parnassus, PA. His parents were of direct Slovak descent, emigrating from the village of Budmerice, Slovakia, to the United States just prior to WWI. Carl is the last member of his family, being pre-deceased by his parents, his sister, Angelina Fisher, and his brother, Ferdinand Adamcik. In his youth he enjoyed the outdoors spending a lot of time hiking in the mountains of PA near his home. He loved to read, listen to classical music, work on crossword puzzles and sudoku.
He served in the US Army Air Corps (later US Air Force) from 1943 to 1972. Carl served during WWII as a navigator in a B-24 Liberator crew and later in the C-17 cargo aircraft. He was also one of the first radar instructors at Langley Field, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a structural engineer with Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 31 years. During this time he made significant contributions to modern metallurgy as a researcher for Homer Research Labs.
He was active in civic matters serving as Judge of Elections in Northampton County for 31 years.
Survivors: Wife, Dorothy; daughters, Angela Bloch and Carolyn Adamcik; four grandchildren, Stefan Adamcik (Jessica), Peter Sanchez (Allison), Alexandra Leitgeb (Tim), and Lian Bloch; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin Sanchez, Evan Adamcik, Owen Adamcik, Dresden Leitgeb and Cooper Sanchez. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Penny Louise Dorward, in 2012. Carl will be remembered as a kind and generous father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all his family.
Services: Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday, January 30, from 10 a.m. - noon at which time a prayer service will be held in the Pearson Funeral Home, 1901 Linden Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017. Interment with military honors will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park on Wednesday, February 1, at 11 a.m.
