Marcella Jean (Smith) Smullen passed away at her home on June 22. The daughter of Joseph and Julia (Graycar) Smith, Maarcella was born on December 30, 1930, and raised in Bethlehem.  Like many women of her generation, her great intelligence and common sense went largely unrecognized, as she raised her boys and cared for her family and home.  In her later years, to be closer to her son and his family she returned home to Bethlehem.

With her passing, we have lost an expansive catalog of 90 years of people and businesses throughout the City of Bethlehem.  With her phenomenal memory, she could tell stories of where people lived and where they worked, their children's names and how they grew up, what businesses were where on both the North and South sides of the city, what commodities cost, what people did to make ends meet and provide for themselves during the Depression and World War II.  Her years spent in Hawaii when her husband was in the Army during the Korean War were some of her happiest, surrounded by other young couples and their children, with their son David a toddler, and where their son Tom was born. Later, she and her husband spent thirty years in Florida where she worked at various jobs, including Joanne's Fabrics and, perhaps her favorite, the Duty Free store at Tampa Airport where she could outsell everyone else!

But most of all, Marcella will be remembered by the many, many recipients of the beautiful objects she made with her skilled hands:  quilts, often embroidered with her perfect stitches, knitted hats and scarves and shawls, aprons and pillowcases, all given away in love to people she knew or even to complete strangers.  She and her love and spirit will live on in those works of art, cherished by all who possess them.

Predeceased by her husband, Albert Edward Smullen, and her son, Thomas James Smullen, she is lovingly remembered by her son David and his wife Judith Smullen.
