Obituary

Richard Mast Reinhard, Jr, 85, of Chicago, formerly of New Jersey, passed away peacefully Friday, October 9, 2026.

Dick was born in Reading, PA to Verna Eisenhauer Reinhard and Richard Mast Reinhard, Sr. He graduated from Elizabethtown College with a major in mathematics and went on to get his Master’s Degree in mathematics at Stevens Institute of Technology. Dick had a successful career at Bell Labs/AT&T where he met the love of his life, Shirley Reed Reinhard. Married for 54 years, they had two children, Richard III and Ruth, who they raised in Mendham, NJ.

Dick was a devoted husband and father who cherished time with his family. A whiz at cards, he and Shirley spent many hours enjoying bridge with friends and competing in tournaments. He looked forward to his weekly poker nights with the guys and always enjoyed the challenge of a good puzzle. He and Shirley also shared a passion for sports, taking every opportunity to cheer their beloved Mets and Jets. Every holiday season, Dick would construct an elaborate model train village with his son for the enjoyment of friends and family.

Dick was involved with every aspect of his children’s lives, especially at their swim meets as a cheering father and an official. Whether it was time coaching little league baseball or going to Indian Princesses and Indian Guides, Dick cherished every moment. He treasured family most, creating memories that would last a lifetime and never missed an opportunity to drop a corny dad joke.

Dick and Shirley loved to travel the world together and their family vacations in Ocean City and Maine. Above all else, Dick’s greatest joy was his family. He loved them deeply and unconditionally, and nothing meant more to him than the time they spent together. His devotion, generosity, and the countless ways he showed his love will forever be valued by those who knew and loved him.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Shirley Reed Reinhard. He is survived by his sister Rosalie Sainsbury, his son Richard M. Reinhard III (Susan) and daughter Ruth Davis (Garrett), and his grandchildren Richard M. Reinhard IV, Spencer Davis and Ella Davis.

Visitation in the Pearson Funeral Home, 1901 Linden Street, Bethlehem, PA at 12:30pm on Saturday, October 17. The burial will follow in Bethlehem Memorial Park Cemetery.
